Fantastic Book -

This is a wonderful step by step book. I was always at a loss on what to do each month being a new gardener and all, but this takes all the guess work out of it. Each month has its own chapter and an exact list of what to do that month, everything from what to plant and feed to what to prune and etc.
Thanks Pat for an awesome book. My family thanks you for the awesome vegetables you have helped me grow!!
God Bless!

Great for a novice -

Having been a homeowner for five years, I've only planted the common stuff: grass, trees, shrubs. All of them were alive but not very pretty. This year I decided to really try gardening. I found this book at my library and am so happy with it, I'll be buying my own copy. It takes the overwhelming idea of planting and maintaining and breaks it into twelve chunks that I can handle and understand. It's a perfect jumping off point and allows me to ignore some information that doesn't apply to me, and gives me enough information for things that do apply, and certainly enough to look up more information if I desire. My roses have already started blooming so much better since I now know, and have dealt with, what's been eating them. I'm expecting so much better produce from my apple tree now that I have pruned some of the buds back and now know that I can't just cut the branches back willy-nilly.
Wonderful book! Can't wait to get my own copy!
Hardly a must. -

After reading these glowing reviews, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. However, I found a lot of information sorely lacking or incomplete. The month-by-month planting guide format is nice, but, in the attempt to guide us through planting almost every single type of flower/vegetable/herb/fruit possible, we get a little information on a lot of plants, but almost nothing is thoroughly covered. For instance, if you plan to grow tomatoes, this book will tell you which month to plant them, give an incomplete explanation as to the causes and remedies of blossom end rot, and give you outdated advice on the advantages of pruning tomato plants. That's it. The other major problem with this book is that organic gardening tips are almost non-existant and the use of synthetic fertilizers is assumed.
Bottom line is this is a great "quick-reference" for hundreds, if not thousands of plants, but if you have any minor problems beyond when to plant and when to water, this book will be no help.

I have just returned to San Diego after years in Texas. Before I left, I had little to no gardening experience here. This book has been a wonderful tool to get me on my way in a new gardening environment. The information is clear, concise, and has already saved me from making what would have been several "newbie" mistakes! I am so glad I found this great resource!
