(Almost) just like the ones we used to know -
They haven't yet been oh-so-elegantly draped on a tree, but all 5 ordered sets light beautifully in the box, so we're half-way there. Neither the shape nor the quality of the light is exactly like the old C7s, but they burn cool, are promised to last, reasonably suggest the old-fashioned look, and may save oodles of dollars for years to come. The blue is gorgeous (the orange/yellow is a bit muted), and I'm sure these will work "just fine." And all things being equal, "just fine" is good enough.
December 27th update: The lights have been on the tree for several days now (I bought plastic clips but used them only on a few portions of the strings), and it's amazing how wonderfully retro the look is. There is zero heat from the lights, and the colors are rich; my only (slight) disappointment is that the lights don't do much to actually "light the tree." This may sound contradictory since the lights are vivid, but they do not create brightness. Because of this, the ornaments are not really highlighted, although having all the living room lights on helps, as does using the REAL (from Germany, not plastic) tinsel. I hope to use these lights for years to come: the dollar savings (I hope) will be significant and the safety element is increased. And, if people really want to see the details of the ornaments, they can do a tree walk-around :) I think these are a good choice, especially if you want to feel especially Bing at this time of year. (And 4 strings were enough for a 7-foot tree.)

Frustration!! -
First of all we had to wait two weeks from the time we ordered until the lights finally showed up. My kids were so excited when we finally received the lights and could decorate the tree. I ordered six strands to cover the tree and imagine our extreme frustration when two of those strands were so dim (obviously defective) that we couldn't even use them. So the top half of our tree does not have lights and we are stuck with the other four strands because at this point I have no time to shop for other lights. Oh and one of the four remaining strands the orange lights have dimmed for some unknown reason. I just hope when I pull these out next year that they even work at all. I think I might have to chalk it up to $140 down the tubes.
I expect much more from a product that is so expensive.

These lights are great - they look just like the ones you remember from your grandparents' house, but they're lightweight and conduct no heat, so they're safe. Also, no chance of shattering if you have little ones.
A New Day For C9 Holiday Lighting -
In our home growing up we always had strings of C9 lights decorating our home. I've continued that tradition on my own home with limited success. The inclusion of fuses for safety purposes made holiday lighting so much of a challenge it ultimately, for this home, eliminated it. The fuses blew frequently, and were difficult to locate at the same retailers that sold the strings. Factor in the difficulties of determining which string or strings fuse blew, prying open the fuse compartment and replacing the fuse without dropping/losing it (esp. difficult in freezing weather conditions), and the ever increasing energy costs to keep them lit and it's easy to see why my home hasn't looked very festive in recent years.
Enter the new era of C9 LED lights. The answer to my prayers? Well... you might say that. I opted for the GKI/Bethlehem set over others preferring the familiar "smooth" surface of the bulbs over the "diamond cut" style offered elsewhere.
I had some concerns over the brightness the bulbs would offer so initially limited my order to one set. Once received I was satisfied enough to order two more sets. All three sets have survived the season w/o a problem, and thankfully, no blown fuses (though they do use them).
Overall I'm very satisfied with the product. The blue bulb in the string is a bit of an odd shade, pretty, but takes some time to get used to. Also I notice the visibility of the lit string in daylight is significantly less than traditional C9 sets which, for me, was a bit of a disappointment.
For novices to the product the bulbs on these strings are NOT replaceable. If and when they start to go I guess you'll just have to replace the entire string. The good news is that LED bulbs have an incredibly long lifespan, which should allow for many, many years of use especially if you only use them over the holidays. Be aware too that there are no clips on this string to attach to a tree, they can only be draped over or wrapped around objects to be displayed.
I still miss my annual routine of laying each string out on the floor, pre-testing each bulb, "flicking" them to try to kick-start them into coming on, and replacing individual bulbs as needed in my own unique color pattern, especially my personal favorite of interspersing some "twinkle" (blinking) bulbs amid the solids. But time marches on, and, given my experiences with the three sets I have and the significant energy savings, I'll accept the trade-off. I'll be price shopping for three more sets between now (Jan/08) and next holiday season. Hopefully they'll be cheaper!
