Great, but room dependent... -

Just got mine and really like it. I ended up turning off the other lights in the first room I tried it in because they were so yellow in comparison and this put out plenty of light. Once I looked into the room at night and mistook the bright light for daylight.
On the other hand, I don't know how this would compare to a cheaper non-full spectrum marketed version. Also the second room I tried it in didn't work out as well. That room was a loft and the walls were much farther away from the light. Without walls to reflect the light around it had more trouble lighting up the whole room.

Significantly better light for reading -

Yes it shouldn't cost $99, yes its basically a cheap torchiere that takes the usual fiddling to put together and doesn't exactly scream class (although I bought the gray one which is nicely nondescript - however it arrived with markings on the base, annoying), yes the dimmer switch is a bit of con, its pretty much either on, or 50% on, or off. And yes I still give it five stars and am going to buy another one.
Here's why. I work in a room with double height ceilings, and I've been relying on either a regular torchiere, or table top halogen lamp or overhead incandescent light to work by. My work involves a lot of computer time and reading paper text. I felt that my eyes were hurting, that there were pools of shadows around me, that the words seemed to float a bit (I'm 42 years old).
Then I got this light, and what a difference it makes. The brightness and cleanness of this light compared to the other sources is astounding. I thought halogen was pretty white for a light - it looks very yellowy compared to this. I also am very sensitive to fluorescent light flickering and was nervous I was going to have that here. Not so, at least so far and I've had this light about four months now.
It has saved my eyes and made working in what was relatively gloomy lighting conditions a joy, it makes me very happy to read under it, and sometimes I'll switch on the old halogen just for comparison and gasp at the difference and wonder how I survived for so long.
So. Do buy this for an office or for working or reading. Don't buy this for "mood lighting" to make your place seem super classy.
Less than expected -

Lamp is easy to assemble, looks nice, but does not illuminate room well. Did not fulfill my need for additional lighting in an extra bedroom. I'm in the process of returning the lamp.
Does as it promises. -

OK.
So eye strain is a problem nowadays. Part of that is attributed to poor lighting. In this day and age of energy efficient bulbs, it's hard to find decent lighting. Incandescent lighting is indeed bright, but not necessarily sufficient. Fluorescent is energy efficient but expensive. Not only that, it takes some time to "warm up" to get to white light. Until then, it will have a yellowish tint which can actually exacerbate the eye strain problem I mentioned.
Enter Full Spectrum Solutions. Their goal, and their proposal, is "true light" - light that is equivalent or at least reasonably similar to natural light. These lights put out comparable to an overcast day, no visible sun. The result is a room lit as though you had a skylight.
So why one star down? Well...
First, these are significantly overpriced. I'd say by about $40. It's not that they don't deliver, it's that at the core, these are nothing more than super bright fluorescent bulbs with some proprietary connectors, meaning you are forced to buy replacement bulbs from the company. They're not carried in your local hardware store, meaning the price is at premium.
Second, if you get the torchiere type, the downward light spectrum isn't nearly as good as the spectrum in the air. You'd think this would be expected - the sun is in the air, etc. However, if you stood outside on an overcast day, you'd see that there is no light focal point. It's omnidirectional. That means in order for this light to emulate that condition, it also needs to be fully omnidirectional.
Lastly, because of aforementioned issue with being forced to buy from the company, they like to ream you on shipping. I should be able to walk down to Home Depot and pick up bulbs and pay only tax.
It's a great lamp...just slight flaws. I submitted a picture to help envision the difference.
